Course description:

In this course, students will learn the essentials of French through online education. The course is suitable to beginners who know little to nothing about French as well as intermediate students looking to increase their language abilities.

The whole course will be delivered online, with video conferencing used for live sessions and a learning management system (LMS) for access to course materials. The range of online materials available to students includes interactive lessons, tests, and assingnments.

 

Course objectives:

Students will be able to after finishing the course:

  • Make efficient use of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French.
    Recognize and utilize basic French grammar and terminology.
  • Start simple French discussions.
  • Read and understand foundational French texts.
  • Write short French paragraphs and phrases.

Course content:

The course will cover the following topics:

  1. Introduction to French Language:

    • Basic French vocabulary and grammar
    • Greetings and introductions
    • Numbers, dates, and time
  2. French Vocabulary by role play and dramatization:

    • Common French words and phrases
    • Vocabulary related to everyday situations
    • Vocabulary related to work and business (depending on the need of the learner)
  3. French Culture:

    • French customs and traditions
    • French art, music, and literature
    • French cuisine and gastronomy
  4. French Pronunciation and Phonetics:

    • French pronunciation rules
    • Common French sounds
    • Accent marks and diacritics

Priority will be given to oral expression. Students will be assessed through a combination of quizzes, assignments, and online tests. The quizzes and assignments will be based on the course content, while the tests will cover the entire course. Students will receive regular feedback on their progress and will have access to online support from the instructor.

Course duration:

With live sessions twice a week, the course will be delivered over the duration of 12 weeks. The length of each live session will be one hour, and students will also need to set aside an extra 2-3 hours each week for practice and self-study.


Course prerequisites and materials:

Enrollment in this course doesn't need any prior French proficiency. For the live sessions, however, students need to have access to a dependable internet connection, a computer or mobile device, and a webcam and microphone.

Through the learning management system (LMS), students will have access to a range of online materials, such as interactive courses, tests, and assignments.
